In 1919, Anton Vogt's operated the newly established flower shop without the concenience of a telephone or even a ballpoint pen to write down orders. Eight-seven years later, Vogt's Flowers is still located on the corner of Flint's Fifth Avenue and Garland Street, and the full service florist has expanded to include four locations, over 50 workers, and the latest technology.
On www.vogtsflowers.com, customers can get ideas for arangements or complete the entire process of selecting, ordering, and paying for flowers online.
Deliveries can be tracked by satellite, as each truck is equipped with a Global Positioning System. Addditionally, the company's computer system is set up to automatically generate emails to customers with the time deliveries were made and the name of the person who signed for it.
"While it's nice to have all that," said owner Kreg Krueger, "if you don't have the quality when it comes to the flowers it doesn't mean much."
To maintain a high-quality shop, Kreg is careful when selecting flowers and sends his staff for regular training sessions in style and design. Yet, he says it's about sentiment, more than running an efficient business. "Our goal is to express the way that you feel," he said. "I don't just want your one order, I want you to feel like we're your florist."
"Flowers are for personal reasons. If we don't treat you with personal attention, I've failed," Kreg said. " When you come in, You should feel like you're the only one shopping in our store."
